!POP
====
!POP is a freeware POP3 mail transport for use with Freenet/Acorn TCP/IP.
It will fetch EMAIL from one or more POP mailboxes and can also send outgoing
EMAIL (using SMTP).
POP is only a transport - unless you are a massochist you will also need
some mail management/reading software. Newsbase and TTFN are recommended.
!POP stores its mailboxes in standard formats, so other packages may work.
POP3 is probably the most common mail distribution protocol used by standard
dial-up internet providers. Even Demon - previously a notable exception - now
offer a POP3 service. Demon users can now use either POP3 or the original SMTP
service (for which you need to run a 'full' SMTP implementation such as Stuart
Brodie's FreeSMTP). For the pros and cons see Demon's home pages.
POP3 is also commonly used on local area networks.
(c) Daniel Pead 1997
See !POP.!Help for full instructions, terms and conditions.
Versions
--------
pop099/arc : Version 0.99 (currently 0.997) Interim release of what will become
version 1.0 - tackles several peoples 'wish-list' features:
* handling of Non-RISC-OS compatible user names (useful for Demon POP3)
* user-definable timeout;
* icon changes to reflect progress;
* uses LAST to skip old mail (obsolete, but useful on some servers...);
* tries to bounce messages rejected by gateway
fnpatch/arc : Patch to fix the problem with 10-character long mail file
names (e.g. Postmaster) in above version. Also includes some extra notes
on installation.
pop098/arc : Version 0.98 - The tried-and-tested release, kept for posterity.
altspr/arc : Alternative, serious minded sprites for version 0.99 or later for
people of a less frivolous disposition.
